MexCal Managing Ecosystems Across the Californias is a research consortium based at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC). Our monitoring program provides long term data to inform how coastal ecosystems (kelp forests, rocky shores, and estuaries) will respond to climatic and anthropogenic effects such as climate change, fisheries, and marine reserves.

Established in 2015, MexCal Managing Ecosystems Across the Californias is a research group led by scientists based at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) in Ensenada, Baja California. We want to understand the effects of climate change and other anthropogenic effects on coastal ecosystems: kelp forests, rocky shores, and estuaries. Our main programs are:

• Monitoring biological and environmental change in order to generate long-term, large-scale data to answer scientific research questions and inform management and policy.
•  Training and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students through research programs, seminars, and workshops.
• Disseminating results to our data-portal, scientific meetings, publications, local managers, fishermen, policy-makers, and the public.
• Collaborating bi-nationally in order to promote the establishment of marine reserves in Baja California.
